Architect: J Mammone Architecture
Builder: Glenstone Constructions
Location: Megalong Valley, NSW
System: Geothermal Exchange System with Horizontal Ground Heat Exchanger
Project Brief/Scope:
Golden Vale, a visionary architectural masterpiece nestled in the picturesque Megalong Valley of New South Wales, epitomizes sustainable living and innovative design. At the heart of this inspiring home lies a cutting-edge geothermal exchange system, meticulously engineered to provide efficient heating, cooling, and domestic water heating while minimizing environmental impact.
Harnessing the Earth’s natural energy, Golden Vale’s geothermal exchange system features a horizontal ground heat exchanger buried beneath the lush landscape surrounding the residence. This network of underground pipes serves as the primary heat source, utilizing the stable temperature of the Earth to exchange thermal energy with an internally-located, whisper quiet 6-pipe water-to-water ground source heat pump.
The in-slab Rehau pipework, renowned for its durability and performance, seamlessly delivers hydronic underfloor heating throughout the living spaces. This radiant heating system ensures uniform warmth, distributing heat evenly across the floors to create a cozy and comfortable environment for the occupants, even during Megalong’s chilliest winter nights.
In addition to heating, the geothermal exchange system powers chilled-water fan coil cooling, providing refreshing relief during the scorching Megalong Valley summers. By leveraging the Earth’s consistent temperature, Golden Vale remains cool and comfortable year-round, without relying on energy-intensive air conditioning systems, thus reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Architecturally, Golden Vale’s design harmonizes with its natural surroundings, featuring expansive windows that frame panoramic views of the valley and blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The use of locally sourced materials and passive design strategies further enhances the home’s sustainability, creating a synergy between modern luxury and ecological responsibility.
As a nominee for ArchDaily’s 2024 Building of the Year, Golden Vale stands as a testament to the power of innovative design and sustainable technology in shaping the future of residential architecture. With its commitment to eco-conscious living and luxurious comfort, Golden Vale is not just a residence but a symbol of a brighter, greener future.
