Architect: Kerstin Thompson Architects
Builder: ADCO Constructions
Location: Bundanoon, New South Wales
System: Geothermal Exchange Closed-Loop Vertical Ground Heat Exchanger
Capacity: 220kW
Project Brief/Scope:
CWL Group assisted in providing an environmentally-friendly and sustainable ground-source heating, cooling, and dehumidification system following Bundanon’s sustainability goals. The mechanics of the system also needed to be “disaster-proof” (bushfire and flood-resistant), post the Black Summer fires that had nearly destroyed the Arthur Boyd collection in 2019-2020.
The key to this fire and floor resilient solution is the geothermal exchange system’s vertical ground heat exchanger, which consists of a network of specialised high-density polyethylene pipes that vary in depth from 600mm to 100m beneath the surface. Unlike conventional surface-mounted cooling-tower alternatives that would typically be utilised, this vertical-ground heat exchanger has a 200-year life expectancy and is completely maintenance-free.
In designing and installing a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger for a ground-source system, CWL Group has left the grounds surrounding the Art Museum and Bridge unimpeded and free for visitors to walk freely. Now open to the public, the owners are enjoying energy-efficient zero-carbon heating, cooling, and dehumidification across the property, year-round.
